Terrain

'Terrain' delves into the geometric patterns and configurations of the natural and man-made topography of the local vicinity, presenting an abstract, geometric reimagining of the Mount Dandenong and the Dandenong Ranges. This installation exhibits a series of sculpturally crafted rocks, each layered with diverse materials that highlight the assorted textures and structures found within the terrain. In this era, as fortune seekers flocked to the goldfields, the fervor for gold eclipsed other pursuits, leading to a scarcity of fresh produce amid fledgling agricultural development. Amidst this, Chinese newcomers toiled to fill the gap, cultivating vital fruits and vegetables.

This piece is an homage to the bustling vegetable markets that once were the heartbeat of Moonee Ponds, bringing to life the 'Vegetable Hawker' as a symbol of vitality in the current era. Through the lens of the artist, Cezary Stulgis, the hawker is re-envisioned with a blend of historical significance and contemporary zest. The figure is captured in mid-stride, a dynamic embodiment of endurance and vigor, distributing fresh produce with baskets skillfully balanced upon his frame.

Aurora

'Aurora,' the Roman embodiment of dawn's first light, shares her essence with the Greek Eos. Lacking distinctive Roman lore, her legend universally heralds the break of day—a symbol of new beginnings and the promise of a fresh dawn. The etymology of her name whispers of luminosity, akin to 'daybreak' or 'sunrise,' and over time, it has come to represent the East and its inhabitants. Intriguingly, her name is thought to resonate with 'aurum,' the Latin for 'gold,' alluding to the radiant glow of dawn. Some even envision Aurora with resplendent white wings, majestically unfurled as she ushers in the day.
